Day Three - rebels [IN]stallation

This night's construction started with an idea that Sarah had for the first night and grew into a beautifully precarious piece that was mostly held together by chance (but again, cudos to all of you since chance was legitimately designed into the system).

We began be infilling a recessed, boarded-up, doorway with panels. The larger panels were used in this area to get a nice pressure-fit dimension that held the assembly snuggly into the doorway's arch. With that done as a stabilizing base, smaller panels grew into towers that linked suitcases on the ground with the doorway up above.

Matt was building a very tall tower, and when his reach gave out, Donovan climbed up a ladder to keep the momentum going. I think the plan was to pull the tower down into an arch (similar to some of the small towers seen in photos from this even), but when we moved it slightly, the tower seemed to slump. Luckily, instead of falling, it looked as though it positioned its shoulder against the wind and froze in a state that allowed its curved connections to place each panel in a state that counterbalanced all of the other panels. ... our own leaning tower (of Adelaide).

Day Two of Installation

Here, we took notes from the previous night and let those inform our construction method. The two big observations were:
A. People needed to see their alley-way destination well before getting to the alley, and
B. The door at the end of the alley required more light to make it a more welcoming/interesting walk...

Therefore, we split the installation into two big halves. One half was pulled a little further out (into the public realm) than the previous night. The other half surrounded the door (still leaving proper egress requirements and staying clear of the ramp).

While walking on the north side of the street, one could see the half on the sidewalk from several doors down. If it was only a bit taller, one might have seen it from the south side of the street as well. Instead, parked cars were about all you could see.

The piece nearest the door was very successfull in getting people to engage the photographs. While waiting to buy tickets at the door, people would investigate several panels, and a few would strike-up conversations about the design with their date, whomever was selling tickets, one of us Rebels, etc.

Notes from the First Construction in Adelaide

Our first installation set-up was last night, and the piece looked great in the alley. The (few) people at the show seemed to take great interest. Tonight should be a better turn-out because the time slot is not competing with the Fringe Main Event concerts or parade as was the case last night. The installation had to combat a pretty steady and at times fierce wind. We designed the system to wrap around a guardrail to add stability/anchorage so as to avoid the box-kite effect. The suitcases acted as roofing in some spots to add weight to the structure. Thank goodness we’ve designed such a flexible piece.

The "On Air" sign was attached to the lighting tree making it the focal piece that it was supposed to be back in Vegas. (Note: The second in town performance did a better job at presenting the sign since we propped it up on a second suitcase.)

Update

Well the internet is more of a hassle in Australia making it hard to write a blog post. We have been having a great time in Adelaide, the people and culture is easy going making everyone feel very comfortable to be here. Our installation has had a warm reception and interest as the days have passed. We recently presented to the University of Adelaide’s School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning where we were greeted with enthusiasm and good questions about the installation, the design team, and our school. The website update was unbelievably well timed making the presentation at the school even better. Good job everyone.

Please post our contact information (email, phone, mail?) on the website. Students from Adelaide may be very interested in working directly with some of you after our awesome presentation yesterday. Cheers! (My internet cafe time is up...)
I fly back all day tomorrow
